TOOLBOX / FIBERS / FILLSENSE

fillsense.

Fillsens is a manufactured, natural polymer, semi-synthetic cellulose fiber and is a form of the viscose fiber. It is manufactured under closed-loop and pollution-free conditions.

Fillsens was first introduced in 2017. It is exclusively produced by Yilmazipek, a company in its third generation, who presently specialize predominantly in rayon fabrics, of which are made in Turkey. The company, founded in 1930, used to specialize in silk. They created Fillsens as a sustainable alternative to silk and to unsustainably made rayon fabrics.

What makes it special is, that it is a continuous lyocell filament. A continuous filament consists of a very long thin thread, which serves as the base of the yarn. Most yarns are made from staple fibers, which first have to be spun before twisting them into yarn. Fillsens consisting of continuous filament makes spinning unnecessary and gives it a unique aspect, drape and handfeel.

As Fillsens is a kind of lyocell fiber – please read the text on lyocell for more information on the production process.

Fillsens is FSC-certified and offers a generous range of fabrics that carry the distinction of releasing zero harmful waste into the environment during the entire fillsens process, from the weaving to the final project. Yilmazipek even offers in-house training programmes and campaigns to promote environmental awareness among employees.

Although Yilmazipek is very much aware of their footprint and impact they on the environment, they only reveal the numbers detailing their energy and water savings, as well as cause beneficial numbers of CO2-emission and usage. These numbers don’t actually represent how much they legitimately use, consume and emit.

Fillsens is a natural cellulosic fiber, meaning used fabrics are fully biodegradable, although cause for speculation still remains since eventually everything biodegrades somehow.

Fillsens has potential to become a circular material if it is not mixed with other fibers during production.

+ PROS

what it gives.

  • it is easy to drape
  • low susceptibility of pilling
  • is softer and more comfortable than other conventional cellulosic products
  • absorbs moisture well
  • high strength when wet
  • low likelihood of shrinking in boiling water

− CONS

what it asks.

ADVICE

what to look for.

The company Yilmazipek produce different kinds of textiles, whereby some of them are mixed with synthetic fibers or with cotton. All this is unfortunately not stated in their bio. Therefore, in case of any uncertainty before working with this material – ask!
