TOOLBOX / FIBERS / CORK

cork.

Cork consists of bark raw material derived from the cork oak and is, therefore, a natural cellulose fiber.

Cork grows mainly in the Mediterranean region. It has been used for over 2000 years already and can reach an age of 200 years. It gets debarked every 9 years and then starts rebuilding cork, which makes cork a prosperous renewable source. Furthermore, at the end of its lifecycle cork is recyclable.

Cork is harvested by hand and it sometimes unfortunately treated with questionable phthalate plasticizers, making it no longer viable to the recycling process.

ADVICE

what to look for.

Go for FCS-certified Cork and try to avoid buying Cork backed with synthetic fibers, as a result, Cork loses its biodegradability.
