TOOLBOX / FIBERS / JUTE

jute.

Jute is a natural cellulose bast fiber. Originally from India, jute is the second most-cultivated textile fiber. It’s is low cost, low maintenance, fast-growing and does not need pesticides or fertilizer to enhance production.

Jute is a very long and strong fiber but these two extraordinary qualities are destroyed nowadays due to industrial and chemical processing which is also why the jute fiber ends up as cheap cargo bags. Therefore we don’t make use of its full potential.

The most common retting technique is very polluting, however, new processes are in development.

Jute is renewable and untreated it is compostable. Things like dye, toxic chemicals, blended fibers and trims can hinder its compostability.

+ PROS

what it gives.

  • durable
  • strong
  • absorbent
  • takes on dyes well

− CONS

what it asks.

  • retting process produces waste water

ADVICE

what to look for.

Work with jute that has not been cottonnised. Cottonised means the fibers are cut into shorter pieces in order to treat another fiber like cotton. Instead, use jute fabrics that have been manufactured of the long and strong fibers jute originally was.
